From Grief to Confidence: One Woman's Boudoir Experience | San Diego Boudoir Photographer
One of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography is that it's only about creating beautiful, intimate images.
While stunning portraits are certainly part of the experience, the true transformation often happens long before the final gallery is delivered. For many women, a boudoir session is an opportunity to reconnect with themselves, celebrate their resilience, and embrace their confidence after seasons of hardship. This heartfelt story from one of my clients beautifully illustrates how boudoir became part of her healing journey after profound loss.
Why Boudoir Photography Can Be life changing.
“The driving inspiration for me doing a shoot like this was seeing my friend Nicholle do it.
I’ve seen other boudoir photographers’ work in the past, but after seeing Carrie Anne’s, I knew she had a special touch. Her photos looked curated, unique, flattering—just everything you’d want from an experience that is otherwise so vulnerable. Nicholle’s photos were phenomenal, but beyond the technical skill behind the camera, I noticed how beautiful and confident Nicholle felt after doing something like this.
I plunged right in and decided to sign up. It has been a rough last few years of navigating pain, uncertainty, and sacrificing every bit of myself to help my family and help others around me. I wanted to do something for me, and I thought, what better time than now?
Shortly after booking, my sweet mom lost her fight to cancer.
This was, and has been, the most difficult thing I’ve had to navigate. My mom and I were the only ladies in the family. My source of female power, motherly guidance, and main support was no longer here. No chronic disease can prepare you for this moment. Even though the anticipation is ever looming, nothing can quite prepare you for it. I was transparent with Carrie Anne about what had happened, and she was so understanding and accommodating.
I decided to move forward with the booking, which initially started as me holding true to something I wanted to do for myself. The shoot became much more than I could’ve ever imagined. I have worked hard over the years to challenge my automatic self-loathing, body image distortions, low self-esteem, eating disorders, and more. I knew I needed to have this moment. If anything, it was representative of my mental health progress- a tangible way to reflect on how far I’ve come and something I could be proud of.
Showing up that day was important to me for this reason, and I am so glad I did. Carrie Anne was so kind and thoughtful in acknowledging my situation, validating my experience, and showing true pride in me deciding to show up for myself. It meant the world to have that kindness transpire. It was everything to have that hype woman making me feel beautiful, just as my mom used to do.
To do something like this is about so much more than the sexy photos- it’s the beauty of finding that female empowerment, femininity, and confidence that I worked so hard toward and that my mama instilled in me.
Thank you, Carrie Anne, for such a soul-touching experience. It couldn’t have been more perfect. I encourage everyone to explore this side of themselves and find the art in what their beautiful body can create. ❤️ “
